GlobeLink Sonnet Project

The following sonnet compositions are the result of a 12th grade students' participation in the international GlobeLink Sonnet Writing Project 2003.

Participating schools were asked to write a sonnet about a bridge in their community (literal or metaphorical). It was our wish to take part in this contest in order to gain some insight into the sonnet structure, its poetic style and the appreciation of poetry from the 16th - 21st centuries.

Bridge of Hope

The sun goes through the golden greenish trees,
The kids are playing lively on the lawn,
Warm winds do touch the hives of busy bees,
The air does feel like gentle flow’rs at dawn.

But dark and heavy clouds pour out cold rain,
Life vanishes in waters’ deep black shade,
The earth’s smooth skin is wrapped with mud and pain,
The smells of dank decay the bridge invade.

The bridge was built from wood and held by ropes,
Where houses fade away - the giant withstands -
He was the one creating trust and hopes,
He served the people stretching out his hands.

The trauma disappears in warming sun,
The kids do come again, they’re having fun.

A Bridge's Life

Grant me some time to introduce myself:
I’m an old bridge surrounded by deep water,
I’ve done my duty for five scores of twelve,
And now my life is getting short and shorter.

Long time ago, then in my prime of life
I flourished in the clear, warm morning light.
But war broke out and cut me like a knife -
In vain resisted I that fearful fight.

I was in luck - thank God I, have survived,
See, here I’m older, wiser than before.
But still the council wants to end my thrive,
It seems I am not useful anymore.

I'll leave this world now like a dying bird
I’ll go now broken-hearted, deeply hurt.

Dark Side of a Bridge

Your destiny is linked to day and night,
Your lane is always strewn with filth and dirt,
There is no lawn, no flow’rs, no sun, no sight,
The constant noise brings death to lovely bird.

You’ve seen the end of many people’s life,
Your splendour fades to misery and harm,
Because of crashes, cars have stopped their drive,
And tragedy and death do hide your charm.

And day by day you try to gasp for air,
But all the prophecies do shatter hope,
Your strong desire does not meet man’s care,
But with this fate, you can’t completely cope.

The lovely life is like a game of chance,
Just if you only take a fleeting glance.

Incomplete

There was a time when we were young and strong,
We stayed together, shared our secrets all,
We read the thoughts although between a wall
And so we were united all day long.

I made the worst mistake in all my years
And nothing is the way it was before.
No longer could I keep your secret more,
Right now my eyes are full of helpless tears.

I feel alone - my heart feels oh so blue -
So many things which I don't want to miss.
The world seems dark, I think I'll see it through,
It's hard to bear the life as now it is.

"Stay friends in bad times, too", I hope it's true,
Remember what you promised - think 'bout this!

A Bridge to Life

Upon the bridge the young fair lady goes,
My Lord, to her you've sent your second dove,
So innocent and pure, she seems a rose
In this cold world that brings the light of love.

No day I did not wander on this arc,
Alone through all my years I went along.
Sometimes it was in life unsure, too dark,
That I could carry on where I belong.

Eternal sunlight falls on me so sweet,
How could I fate's obligingness foresee.
The world does stop as our gazes meet,
Where I have wished to die I will come free.

With her I dare to seek my own new ways,
Now with this girl I will surmount all days.
