Gymnasium Burgdorf becomes an
“Gymnasium Burgdorf is on its way to becoming an ‘Europaschule’” – until recently we could read those words in our brochure. Now we’ve reached our goal: as of the 2015/16 school year, Gymnasium Burgdorf belongs to the “Europaschulen in Niedersachsen” and for the next five years, it has the honor of bearing the title, “Europaschule”.
Projects, exchanges, co-operations, and a newly developed European curriculum form the basis of this distinction. Among these initiatives are grade five’s regular participation in the Europa-Wettbewerb; our exchanges with schools in France, Hungary, and Poland; our co-operation with the Mehrgenerationenhaus (multi-generational house) in Burgdorf; and encouraging a sense of European identity in the classroom.
But this is just the beginning. The honor of becoming an “Europaschule” only motivates us to constantly improve and expand our efforts in this area. In the current school year there are already plans for the introduction of the Young European Professionals (YEP) in ninth grade geography lessons and a “Sprachendorf” (Language village), which will allow the seventh grade students to test their skills in their second foreign language (French, Latin, or Spanish).
The introduction of bilingual science lessons is also a long-term goal at Gymnasium Burgdorf.
